Letter to Poline from Aron
February 2, 1914
Kishinev to Paris
Rue Vieille du Temple 41
Welcome, my dear comrade, Pulinka. I went to the post office No letter again. I am offended. The day is long and sad. I have been sad since you left me. Sitting alone here…thinking about you here. The dark makes me feel better squeaking that you’re here will never forget my past. I will write about my feelings next time. It is 4:00 now. I went to the store and to my great happiness, they gave me two letters, one for you and one from Manya from Odessa. She’s not happy about me, my darling, my life, why do you feel lonely? I am asking you, my dear girlfriend, to live happily well, don’t cry and I want you to get fatter. I want you to see the way you looked when I sent you home to Paris. I feel you should feel happy that you left that circle in which both of us have been. I have been counting months and days when that happy hour comes, when I will be leaving those people. They call themselves our relatives or friends, but I will tell you who they are when I see you. Keep dreaming that I will be very soon with you and live happily to scare our enemies. It doesn’t seem awkward to me because I am thinking to the same way you do. I only know you would leave. That’s why I did everything possible to postpone your departure. We did it purposely to have extra rubles to go to America. You are asking me to do everything as soon as possible. I would go to you even today but my sister wrote to me that she was going to send some kind of a card and a few dollars to leave earlier so I would have enough money. Easter/Passover comes and they will be selling a lot of stuff during that time, and I must work an extra month. In regards to the equipment, you have to pay 40 rubles, and if it is a really good deal and you benefit from it, I can send you 40 rubles to pay for studying and you can make partial payments back. Only if it is a really good thing. Now a difficult thing appears. You are going to work for four months. What do you want me to do when I can come in 3 months only? Will you wait in Paris? Life is expensive and bear(?) big expenses. I am a very rational person and I like to calculate everything and think it over. Better if I stay in Kish…I personally don’t want to stay here and want to be with you as soon as possible. We need to think it over and over again. I will send money if you need it. I love you with my whole heart and when I say that I feel much better. I trust in you and I trust in your love towards me. And I know you are not going to behave the way one of your friends did about when write to me. Please with 1 thought with God’s help I will be with you. What kind of a [?] write to your father? On Sunday? If you will continue to request me, and you should do that with no strings attached asking immediately that you send to me your picture from Paris to my home address – new address 62 Sholimon Prepsky – staying with someone I discovered something interesting about Gildman. He borrowed 5 rubles and will be here in 3 weeks and will pay it back. [Different calendars?] Stay healthy. All the best, you unforgettable [?] – Arnold
To my best friend Poline –
I am writing a few words in rhymes,
So that we will be friends forever.
I love you madly;
I am giving all my life to you.
I have been dreaming for a long time;
So I know you really well.
The happiness smiled at me, but not in full measure;
Because now you are apart from me.
My heart beat high as a sea wave;
Be happy, my one and only.
It is not easy, and it is easy,
We need to love deeply.
And your love — your thoughts are flying like the bees; nobody is able to fight them.
Your beloved friend Arnold
